Ms. Nga Fan SHUM

Professional Background
Dr. Nga Fan Shum serves as the Colorectal Nurse Consultant in the Department of Surgery at Queen Mary Hospital. She holds a master’s degree in health service management and a doctoral degree in Nursing.

Experience and Clinical Contributions
With 18 years of experience in the colorectal specialty, Dr. Shum’s early work emphasized cancer case management, care delivery, and addressing the information and support needs of colorectal cancer patients undergoing treatment. She has established six specialized colorectal nurse clinics, including cancer care, bowel dysfunction, polyp care, triage assessment, cancer survivorship care, and a fast-track rectal bleeding assessment clinic. These clinics are aligned with the department’s service direction to address a variety of patient needs.

Recognition and Teaching
In 2009, Dr. Shum was recognized as Outstanding Staff of Hospital. She is actively involved in teaching various courses in Hong Kong.

Research and Publications
Dr. Shum has a strong engagement in research activities and has published 9 papers in peer-reviewed international and local journals. Her research interests focus on colorectal cancer, the quality of life of colorectal cancer patients and their carers, bowel dysfunction, telephone intervention, and evidence-based nursing practice.
